How It Can Be Dangerous To Keep Data On A Memory Card
Last week I found out for myself how unwise it is to keep photos stored on memory cards. I must admit that this was something that somebody had warned me about before but I chose to ignore the advice. I paid for it big time because last week my memory card became corrupted and I have now lost over a thousand photos. What’s making this even worse is the fact that the few people I have spoken to about this seem to think that the photographs are gone and that there is no way of getting them back.
This has been a very upsetting episode for me and the worst thing is that it is my own entire fault. I have lost among the one thousand photos, memories of my kids birthday parties and photos that we took of our four foreign holidays not to mention the trips away within the UK. In fact I had photographs of the best holiday we had ever had in Florida, USA, stored on the memory card. Even though I was planning to print those photos out, I was waiting and waiting and never did it. One of the worst things of all is the fact that photos of my children growing up are gone now forever. As you can imagine, I am in the dog house with my wife because she had been on at me for ages to get it done and I just kept putting it off.
I am now telling everyone I can about the dangers of these memory cards. It is possible that these devices can malfunction. One of our friends who works in the computer industry told me that it is not if but rather when a memory card will become corrupt. His advice is to make sure that the photos are transferred to a computer immediately and then stored in another location too. I have learnt my lesson the hard way, and will never again use a memory card to store photos long term. It is just a pity that I had to lose so much in order to learn this lesson.
Memory Cards are used in many products today. R4 cards are a good example. One more that you could find on your travels is the R4i.
